Appointment of new Trustees
Heeley City Farm was founded in 1981 following a successful campaign to halt a bypass. The Heeley Tenants and Resident’s Association wanted to see the derelict land, earmarked for the road, transformed to improve the Heeley community. The Farm has become a cornerstone in the Heeley community, as well as for many people from further afield. As well as being a place for people and families to visit, the Farm provides opportunities for young people and for vulnerable adults
Having faced some challenges in 2022, the Farm is in a far more positive and stronger position. Since then, a new Board of Trustees has been appointed and, with the Senior Leadership Team, has clarified the Farm’s purpose and priorities and stabilised the financial position. The Board is now working very closely with staff to ensure that the Farm continues to successfully play its role in the community.
The Farm is looking to further strengthen the board with the appointment of four new trustees.
The role
Heeley City Farm is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. Heeley City Farm’s trustees form the governing body for the charity and company. They are responsible for ensuring that the Farm fulfils its purpose, complies with its articles of association and the law, and manages its resources well. The trustees must always act in the Farm’s best interests, act with reasonable care and skill, and fulfil statutory accountability requirements.
More specifically, the trustees agree and then oversee the implementation of our longer-term plans for the Farm both as a city-wide resource for young people and vulnerable adults and as an integral part of community development in Heeley, Meersbrook and Gleadless Valley.
Trustees must be able to commit to attending meetings held once per month, usually on a Thursday evening at 5:30pm at the Farm.
The trustees are unpaid but can claim reasonable expenses.
Trustees must be at least 16 years old and must not be disqualified from being a charity trustee or company director. They are also subject to an enhanced DBS check given the nature of activities undertaken by the Farm
Further information about the role of charity trustees can be found on the Charity Commission website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/charity-commission-guidance
